I apologize for being late to this 8 and 8.1 party because I never used the OS in the past at all so this is all a learning experience for me.

I decided to make use of one of them and of course it did the upgrade to 8.1 Pro with Media Center which is what's running at this moment and of course that is not activated. Then I realized I still had those free WMC keys (which I now realize may be useless since the time period where they could be used/activated is long since past). So, of course I just installed Windows 8.1 Pro cleanly to the device, not an upgrade, a completely fresh clean installation from the 8.1 ISO (off a USB 3.0 stick created with Rufus for UEFI of course) and it activated without any issues - I did not have to enter a Product Key at any point in the process whatsoever and it was activated after the install before it ever went online which is fine. I have a few of those Windows Media Center free keys that were given out years ago but I never used any of them It came with Windows 8 Pro from the factory, and I can install Windows 8.1 Pro (using the ISO I got from Microsoft directly) and it will activate just fine with 8.1, but I can if necessary get the Windows 8 Pro ISO as well. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro (the 1st version, not the RT ARM-powered one but the Core i5 CPU).

I know this is a somewhat older thread and I've read through it once already and I'm still not sure how to proceed so I will lay my situation out and hopefully someone can tell me how I might be able to proceed.
